Costume
and Makeup
Syllabus
Mr. Davis OCSA
This is the class where we play dress up….for real. The costumes used on stage set the mood, time period, and style of the show and tell us about the characters in it. Your ability to discuss the elements of the design, and produce the clothes that are called for are necessary skills for costuming in the entertainment field.
We will have demonstrations and individual assignments in these areas-
Sewing- hand sewing and the use of sewing machines to produce garments that are appropriate for the show and can take the abuse from the actors performing the production.
Patterns- reading the pattern notation and directions to produce clothes from printed patterns. And creating pattern from existing garments to reproduce or adapt the style of garment for a show.
Fabric- You need to be able to identify different types of fabric and be able to work with them to sew costumes. We will be discussing drape, lay, weave as well as natural and synthetic fibers.
Costume design for a show- What is involved in creating all the costumes for a particular show. The styles and fashions that work for this interpretation and will also allow the actors to perform all their blocking and choreography.
Costume history- Design draws on the entire history of people wearing clothes everywhere in the world to create the costumes for a show. You will learn the different ages and places in the world, and fashion trends that happened over the thousands of years we have been dressed.
Grading
You will be graded on your participation during the building of the shows in our production season, your performance on specific projects assigned in the shop, and paper assignments and tests on fashion and costume terminology. If you are not familiar with something or you need more training on specific tools-
you are expected to ask for help.
There will be some opportunities for run crew this year, dressing the
actors. Taking advantage of these
opportunities will increase your participation grades.
You are here to learn- I want you to ask questions. Do not put yourself in unsafe situations.
