Syllabus
Mr. Davis OCSA
This class will deal with some of the more advanced topics that come up in theatrical carpentry. We will have demonstrations and individual assignments in these areas-
Carpentry- Mitres and molding, using the table saw for rabbits and dado and mitre cuts. Router jigs for molding production and mortising, plunge cutting with the jig saw.
Plans- reading the plans for construction drawings, where to put the seams, building for a tour, lumber orders derived from the plans, and pricing the show.
Structural engineering- Distribution of weight and load on structures, calculating live and dead load, analysis of weight loads for specific shapes and materials.
Rigging- Distribution of forces in theatrical rigging, rigging to a stage grid, calculating safe working loads
Grading
You will be graded on your participation during the building of the shows in our production season, your performance on specific projects assigned in the shop, and paper assignments and tests on the engineering calculations. If you are not familiar with something or you need more training on specific tools-
you are expected to ask for help.
You are here to learn- I want you to ask questions. Do not put yourself in unsafe situations.
As always- dress for the shop, plan to get dirty.
