Lighting  Syllabus

Osceola School for the Arts           Mr. Davis

In this class we will be covering all the aspects of theatrical lighting, technology and design.  The class will be spending the first semester working on the technology side of lighting.  We will cover topics such as circuitry, instrument types, trouble shooting, soft patch, hanging, focusing, and equipment maintenance.  Lessons will also cover optics, reflection, refraction, and illumination.

The second semester will concentrate on design.  We will cover lighting angles, color theory, composition onstage, and light board programming.  There will be several assignments dealing with visualizing, interpreting and duplicating lighting effects from art, theatre, and film.

Dress Code:   We will get dirty, this is a working class- dress for it.  We will be handling dusty equipment and working in ‘out of the way’ spaces.  I strongly encourage students who like to dress up to leave some work clothes in their locker for this class.  Students who do not dress appropriately will not get participation credit.

  •  No open toed shoes
  •  No skirts or dresses in the catwalks (bring a change of clothes)
  •  Remove all jewelry
  •  Long hair must be tied back

You will also be trained to work in the catwalks, if you wish to, and I think you are ready (students who have problems with high places are not required to do this).

Grading:  The following guidelines will be used to determine your final grade:

No late work will be accepted!

Quizzes-       all graded on a 100 percent scale.

There will be several short quizzes, most will be a surprise.

Projects-      some projects with be done in groups and some individually.

The whole group will get the same grade so choose your partners carefully.

Participation-       all students are expected to participate in hanging and focusing for all the

OCSA productions.  People that engage in the process will learn a lot. Those that hang back and let others do the work will not receive credit for participation.
